A great idea to try is to record a story for your grandchild. Although you are not a professional storyteller and might not be confident in your speaking abilities, your grandchild could care less – they will just be happy to hear you!
You can read a favorite story, sing a song, walk them through an activity you are in the process of doing, or make a combination of all or some of these. You might even want to try something modern like a nursery rhyme rap. Your grandchild will be filled with glee and laughter hearing you rapping, won’t they? Be creative!
You can also do a statement segment featuring lines like “I like you because…..” or “I love you so much when you…..” Nothing could be sweeter than hearing a grandma or grandpa spouting off a list of reasons why they love you, miss you, can’t wait to see you, etc.

If you don’t already, you may think about investing in a computer. With internet access, you can easily correspond with your grandchildren on a regular basis through emails and instant messages. This is such an easy way to connect often!
Sending a daily “good morning” email message can help brighten up any grandchild’s day. You can also prepare slide shows of photos or drawings on a number of programs. You can also get a web cam that is easily plugged into your computer, and you can do video “phone” calls over the internet with a free service such as Skype. Imagine the fun you could have (and for your grandchildren too!) by seeing each other over the computer! Plus, your grandchildren will enjoy interacting with you as if you were right there in room with them.
And don’t be afraid of technology! If you’re unsure about a computer or the internet, check with your local library or senior center. Most will offer free computer classes to local seniors to help you on your way.
